postheadericon Best way to speed up a computer for free.?

Anti-spyware and anti-virus is a good thing to have. Remember that no software is perfect. Sometimes I check my computer with several anti-virus softwares. One that is free and does a pretty good job is AVG (http://free.grisoft.com)

Adding RAM (memory) is a good thing to do. Although it is not “free”, with today’s prices, it is pretty inexpensive. I would suggest, with Windows XP, to have at least 1 GB of memory (1,024 MB = 1 GB). Or even 2 GB would be better.

Another thing to consider, since you are playing games, is how good your video card is. Upgrading your video card may help a lot. Many gaming video cards have their own processors, etc.

Since you mention online games – - the speed of your Internet connection may also be something to consider. If you have “the best computer in the world” and have a SLOW connection to the Internet, you still could have “laggy” response time.

Of course, as always, keep your computer “cleaned up”. Delete “Cookies”, “Temp” files, and “Temporary Internet” files. Do a scan disk periodically. Do a “disk cleanup” and a “disk defrag”. Etc.

Be sure that there is some “free space” on your computer. I would say that there should be at least 3 GB of free space so that your computer has room to “think” with. 5 GB would be better. If there is not enough free space – - it is time to delete some files off of your computer. Be careful doing this. You don’t want to delete files that are necessary for your computer to work. If you have a lot of pictures, video files, etc you may want to get them off of your hard drive (burn them to a CD and then delete them from your hard drive).

Once you have deleted files, etc – - you will want to re-do the “disk cleanup” and the defrag.

Ultimately, you need to find out what kind of processor is in your computer. If it is not, at least, a Pentium 4, you may need to buy a new computer. A dual processor would be very nice.

Good Luck.
