There are many things that happen on a daily basis that we tend to just take for granted such as the sun coming up each and every morning. Did you ever think of what would happen if the sun ever failed to rise? Whoa, that’s a deep one. Well my point is, just as the sun does come up each day, there is a very good chance that one day your going to have an experience when your computer freezes up. I would like to go over a few things that you can do to hopefully prevent this from ever happening or at least be prepared when it does happen.

1. Backup Your Data: This has got to be one of the most overlooked practices by the average computer user. We always think about doing it and never really take any action to implement a plan that will ensure our data is backed up if something terrible happens to our computer. If you use a computer on a daily basis then you will most certainly experience a time when your computer freezes up. Starting with Windows Vista, Microsoft has built in some pretty good backup tools. If you have an external hard drive, then take a few minutes every couple of days and run a backup to your hard drive, or use the software that comes with most externals to backup your machine. The preferred method would be to get yourself setup with an online backup service such as Mozy. They offer 2GB worth of backup for free, or unlimited at $4.95 per month. Not a bad deal!
2. Program Maintenance: When you buy a new computer in today’s world, it comes loaded with so much crap software it is unbelievable. It is mostly software that you will never even use. What really ‘tweaks my melon’ is it seems like every new computer has some kind of floating ‘access’ bar that loads when you boot your computer. Most people find these annoying and they do nothing other than slow your machine down. Take a few minutes when and look through your installed programs and uninstall anything you don’t find familiar and that you do not use. Also, don’t install all kinds of programs that you will never use. Every time you install a program it is going to clutter your computer registry which could eventually lead to computer lockups and lead to your computer freezes up. Get a reputable Registry Cleaner and use it. You may be surprised at how well your computer runs and how it keeps its performance over the long term.
3. Hardware Drivers: This is one of the more popular culprits when your computer freezes up. An invalid or corrupt driver will cause your computer to lockup without thinking twice. Although I think that Microsoft has gotten better at preventing this from happening, it doesn’t help that they come out with a new OS every couple of years. This causes hardware manufacturers to have to continually write new driver software to meet not on the new operating systems but also keep the current drivers up to date with all of the Microsoft Operating Systems updates. You get my drift, hardware drivers can cause major headaches if you don’t stay on top of them as the will lead to your computer freezing up. You may want to check back to your computer manufacturer’s website every few months and just check to see if there are any high priority driver updates. Sites like HP and Dell make is pretty easy to navigate and find your exact machine.

So you can almost write it in stone. When your computer freezes up, you want to be not only prepared, but also take some preventative steps that will hopefully never let it happen. Backup your data, uninstall all of the programs you don’t use, and keep your drivers up to date. These are all things every computer user should do.
