How can I speed up my computer and Internet?
OK, first you need to know the difference between Internet speed and computer performance. If a Youtube video is taking long to load, and you have cleared your browser cookies and cache, then that is because of your Internet speed, NOT the computer, call your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and tell them you are unhappy about the speed of your Internet connection.
If your computer is running slowly in general then do the following:
Download and install AVG (a free light weight antivirus) Do a scan. Download and install Ccleaner, Do a registry fix and clean.
Go to Start > Run > msconfig > startup tab > untick everything except for antivirus and any internet connection program (such as wireless app etc) This will speed up your boot time.
Go to services tab Tick hide Microsoft services (because you need pretty much all of them) Untick programs that you do not use every day for example Adobe Updater. Adobe Updater is a stupid background app that will use a tonne of resources so that Adobe programs on your computer are updated like once a year. These updates are completely unnecessary. Go through the list and untick anything else like that; if you are unsure whether you should keep something ticked just type it into Google and you will see what program it belongs to, then you choose if you use that program everyday.
This stops useless background programs using your computer resources, then you have more resources to run your own programs on.
Please remove Mcaffe and Norton from all the computers you have access to. I advise EVERYONE I know to not use those 2 programs. They are such resource hogs and their virus protection isn’t as good as it claims. Something like AVG and Avira do much much better. Plus they are cheaper.
If after this you find your machine is slow, consider upgrading RAM. If you are running Vista, you will need atleast 2GB but if you want to keep things smooth then 4GB will be better. If you are running XP you won’t need as much as Vista.
Run Disk Defragmenter, found in start > programs > system utilities (for XP)
Turn your computer off daily
