How to Fix Your Slow Computer for Free
The first thing you need to do is to assess the state of your computer. Does it even start up to Windows? Is there a blue screen or another error displayed? Is it just slow or are there pop-up advertisements on the screen?
The computer will not turn on. Check for any lights on the computer tower. If there are no lights, check the power cables. If the power is fine, it could be a hardware issue which must be fixed by a technician. If there are lights on the tower but nothing on the monitor, make sure the monitor is on, has power, and is securely connected to the tower. While it could be a problem with your monitor, the problem is more likely a hardware issue with the tower and needs to be seen by a technician.
The computer turns on but there is a blue screen with an error message that appears or the computer keeps restarting on its own. This is seen if there is a serious problem with the computer relating either to software or hardware that was recently installed on the computer. If you connected anything to the computer recently before the problem, disconnect it and try again. If you installed a new program or software, it will need to be uninstalled. I would like to introduce you to Safemode. Safe mode starts your computer with the bare minimum programs that it needs in order to start correctly. This allows the computer to start up much faster and bypasses any processes that may be harmful to your computer. Safemode is highly recommended before running any virus scans so that the program can easily remove any problems that it finds. The way to start your computer in Safemode is as follows. Turn off your Computer > Hold in F8 on the Keyboard when the first screen appears > If you receive an error saying “keyboard failure” restart and try to press F8 periodically during the startup rather than holding it in > Choose Safe Mode from the list of available options. You will notice that your background is black and the resolution is weird, but this is normal. Now I want to introduce you to Add/Remove Programs. You reach this feature by go to: Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Find the program or software that you recently installed and click on it. A button should appear on the right-hand side which says either Remove or Change/Remove. Click it. Follow the prompts in order to uninstall the program.
