How to Make Windows XP or Vista Faster: Computer Tech Tips
“Hi my name is Dave Andrews and today I am going to show you how to make Windows XP or Vista faster. I’m going to run this on Vista but this will work for XP as well. Let’s go to our computer and click on the start button and we are going to go to a program called MS Config which is built into the operating system. In Vista I’m just going to type it right here in the search panel and in Microsoft XP you can click on the start button then type in run and then MS Config. Now in Vista you have to be an administrator to continue so I’m just going to hit continue and let’s go to the start up tab. Now these are a list of programs that run when your computer boots and as you can see I have a lot of them unchecked and two here are checked that are required by the driver for my video card. The general rule of thumb is if you don’t know what these programs are you can safely uncheck them and that basically will keep them from launching when the computer boots up which will take a lot of time on your startup and since they are not running a lot of time on the background it will make your computer run faster in general. When you are done just press apply and say o’kay. Now next we can run a disc clean up on your hard drive. Let’s go to my computer under the start menu, right click on your C drive, go to properties and what we are going to do is go to defrag, go to tools and choose defragment now. You have to be an administrator on Vista and this will basically scan your hard drive and put files together that may have been broken up on the drive and it will cause it to open faster and we are just going to click defragment now to start that defragmentation. My name is Dave Andrews and I have just showed you how to make Microsoft XP or Windows run faster.”
