Increase Torrent Download Speed using Port Forwarding (Router)
Some torrent user might experiences slow torrent files download speed is due to lack of router configuration such as port forwarding features or internal router firewall security blocking. As most of the router by default has activated the firewall security to block all incoming bit torrent connection. Meanwhile, lack of router setting on port forwarding features or enable uPnP features also might cause the torrent data transfer reaching the computer destination on local area network will be slow or blocked.
Example: Torrent client uses TCP port number 6881 as default port but there is more than one computer on local area network. Whenever any torrent data reach your router using port 6881, the router doesn’t know where should the torrent data be directed and which local computer that have activate BitTorrent client. So, this might cause network confusion to router hardware to take time figure out the correct IP destination.
So, below is a configuring port forwarding tutorial (Using Linksys router) to increase torrent download speed on your computer.
How To Increase Torrent Download Speed using router configuration:
- Firewalls can block nearly all of the ports used by P2P clients. To ensure the BitTorrent ports are made available to requesting clients. Turn off the router firewall and enable uPnP features allow the BitTorrent ports to pass through.
- Firewalls can block nearly all of the ports used by P2P clients. To ensure the BitTorrent ports are made available to requesting clients, a home router or firewall can be manually configured to accept them. Most home routers possess a feature called “Port Range Forwarding” to do this. This feature allows the administrator to tell the firewall where traffic for a given port number should be directed. Example: you can set the port forwarding setting and ip address is your computer ip address like below :
- A BitTorrent client normally associates the TCP port number 6881. However, if this port is busy for some reason or there are other bit torrent client using the same port, the client will instead try successively higher ports (6882, 6883, and so on up to a limit of 6999). In order for outside BitTorrent clients to reach this one, they must be able to connect to the correct port.
- For BitTorrent, many home users set up port forwarding on the TCP range 6881-6889. These ports must be directed to the computer running the BitTorrent client. If more than one computer on the network may run BitTorrent, a different range such as 6890-6899 or 6990-6999 can be used for each. Remember that BitTorrent uses ports in the 6881-6999 only.
I hope this configuring router port forwarding tutorial will benefit for those torrent user want to improve p2p files downloading speed. Especially those torrent user that stay on some country, which their Internet services provider like to limit the connection offered on the these bit torrent ports. Hope that this torrent tips can help you increase torrent downloading speed significantly.
