MacInTouch Reader Report: Browser Performance Tips

Thank you for the tip for IE 4.5! I’ve long switched to IE because of the advantages it offers, such as using Apple’s MRJ for Java, better handling of cache files, and Appearance Manager-savvy.
But, I do have a suggestion for those still using Netscape and also use a RAM disk for higher performance. Instead of using the RAM disk option built into the Memory control panel, I suggest using Maverick Software’s shareware AppDisk (currently version 1.7.4). AppDisk’s advantage is that it creates the RAM disk using it’s own application memory, instead of System memory. This means that you can free up the memory by merely quitting AppDisk. AppDisk also offers some convenient features; such as the ability, configured through it’s preferences, to automatically launch an application on startup and quit when that app quits. Therefore, you can use AppDisk/Netscape only when you want to surf, and not needlessly tie up memory when you’re not!
Of course, when surfing from a modem, nothing is faster than turning off images (clicking the “load images” button in the toolbar when needed (in IE, the button bar needs to be switched to “Compatible Plus”)…

I am impressed … I added the RAM cache to my Netscape preferences and move both the History file and the disk cache to a RAMDisk. I have a 12MB RAMDisk with an 10MB disk cache and a 4MB RAM cache.
Netscape on my home 120Mhz PPC is now faster than Netscape on my 350MHz Dell at work.
One recommendation: I have a fully automatic RAMDisk program handling my History file and disk cache. Its a shareware program called RamBunctious available at:
So far it works like a charm, automounting at boot and having all files available for Netscape. At shutdown, the ramdisk saved to a disk image.
