Every user wants to get the most out of his computer and that’s why he uses every possible way to make his PC better and better. One of those ways is keeping your computer up to date. This includes having latest drivers directly from respective company’s websites.

But sometimes latest drivers create problems due to which we have to seek the advice of our vendors which is in fact quite unnecessary. When I state about problems, I am concentrating on a particular problem related to graphics driver.

Sometimes, when we update our graphics driver (whether for external or on-board card), the display stutters and freezes and in most cases our computer restarts. This is not a very big problem if you know what to do and how to do.

Computer Freezes and Crashes Why Does My Computer Crash, Freeze or Hang All The Time?

Do you see a lot of messages like, “This program performed an illegal operation and will be shut down” ? Or do you find that your mouse often freezes and you have to reset your computer to regain control?

This is a very common complaint for many computer users. Why this happens can be due to a number of things. The most common causes of these troublesome problems will be covered here. They fall into the following general categories:

• Hardware: Defective or mismatched components in your computer.
• Aluminum Migration & ESD: Premature ageing and “Electro Static Discharge” can make a computer very intermittent.
• Operating System: Some versions of Windows have bugs that can cause these problems.
• Drivers: Buggy or down-level drivers can cause many problems.
• Software: Some programs have bugs in them that can cause these problems.
• Memory Fragmentation: Do you often see the message, “System is dangerously low in resources” If so you are probably suffering Memory Fragmentation.
• CMOS Settings: Improper CMOS settings can cause many problems. Changing CMOS settings can also be used to help diagnose some hardware problems.
• Loading Order: The order in which the software components of your computer are loaded into memory, at startup each day, can cause a multitude of odd problems.
• A Combination of the above: Defects in any of the above may only show up under specific circumstances.

A crash (or system crash) in computing is a condition where a program (either an application or part of the operating system) stops performing its expected function and also stops responding to other parts of the system. Often the offending program may simply appear to freeze. If this program is a critical part of the operating system kernel the entire computer may crash.

Many crashes are the result of the execution of a single machine instruction, but the causes of this are manifold. Typical causes are when the program counter is set to an incorrect address or a buffer overflow overwrites a portion of program code due to an earlier bug. In either case, it is quite common for the processor to attempt to execute data or random memory values. Since all data values are possible but only some values are valid instructions, this often results in an illegal instruction exception. By chance such data or random values could be valid (though unplanned) instructions. If while successfully executing such instructions the processor happens onto a branch instruction that moves the program counter back a few bytes it would simply repeat those few instructions over and over, being stuck in an endless loop. One might say that the original bug that upset the program counter “caused” the crash, but the actual fault was an illegal instruction or endless loop some time later. The art of debugging such crashes is connecting the actual cause of the crash (easily determined) with the code that set off the chain of events. This is often very far from obvious—the original bug is usually perfectly valid code from the processor’s perspective.
