Finding a Computer Repair Shop You Can Trust By Joe Duchesne

Your have a computer repair that needs to get done right away. You are ready to take it anywhere. Question is, where should you take it? Does it really matter where you take it? I would suggest that it does. Here are some things you may have not considered before.

What kind of turn around time do they have? Some computer repair shops will take two to three weeks to return your computer to you. Are you ready to be without your computer for that long? If not, shop around. There are computer repair shops that can get your computer back to you in as little as a few hours. Some of these faster companies can charge more but the speed is worth it if you are working on a big project that has to get done right away.

postheadericon Opening a PC Repair shop?

Beware the BSA. From what I have heard, they lurk about the fringes of computer repair shops, looking to sue into oblivion the first person who might have installed a copy of Win95 and not charged for it.

Never be afraid to collect someone’s old junk, clean it, and refurbish it into a discount computer.

Most people just want faster, and that means less processes, more RAM, and a defragged drive. I’ve seen people put perfectly good computers out on the curb; after picking them up, I discovered that they had never done any kind of disk repair and had entirely too little RAM for the OS they were running.

postheadericon Price check: How much to fix my laptop?

computercropMy PC is having some serious issues. It’s running way slow. It’s freezing up. And a couple of weeks ago I started getting “Your system has a virus!” pop-ups that just won’t go away. I’m not a techie, so where to take my decrepit machine for help? By decrepit, I mean a 2007 Gateway laptop. Tired of listening to my friends telling me to “just get a Mac already,” I decided to find out how much it would cost me for a professional diagnosis. I checked out Yelp for a list of computer repair shops, chose those with decent reviews and called for some quotes. Here’s what I got, and what I figured out in the end.

When I recited my computer-despair list, each shop offered basically the same thing: virus and spyware removal, anti-virus software installation (AVG unless otherwise specified), the vague “computer performance optimization,” and registry de-fragmentation (which I can’t explain to you but this guy can). I didn’t actually bring my machine to any of these places, so I can’t speak to quality-of-service—just to price. Here they are:

Compunet Advance Corporation, Sunset Park: 6216 Fifth Ave. between 62nd St. & 63rd St., 718-567-7660
Cost/Service $45 to remove viruses and spyware, and $65 to reformat, which basically erases everything, installs just the operating system so it’s like brand new. Which also means you lose everything that was on it.
How Long Same-day service, when you drop it off in morning. This one was a little less friendly than some of the others.

postheadericon Fix a Slow Computer

Would you like to fix your slow computer? Do you even have problems with it freezing up completely? Do you sometimes get the dreaded “Blue Screen of Death”? That one can be especially troubling, as I’m sure you can attest to if you’ve ever had the misfortune of experiencing it. Thankfully, with the advent of Windows XP, and now Windows Vista, computer problems such as slow and crashing computers have been reduced dramatically. However, for many computer users they are still an expensive and vexing problem.

Do want to fix a slow computer? If these computer crashes happen to you on a regular basis you know how frustrating they ca be. In addition they can cost you vital time and money. If you’ve ever lost important work or research, you know that feeling all too well. If you’ve resorted to saving your work constantly, or backing up your computer hourly instead of daily or weekly in order to prevent lost data or wasted hours, you’re probably wondering what the cause of your troubles are. The natural reaction of many when faced with a slow computer or Windows system crashes is to curse the boys of Redmond, or Bill Gates himself, and dutifully start over again.

Most of these problems actually have a common cause. Weather you’re having problems with a computer that’s running much slower than it did when it was new, or going off into it’s own world every once in a while, the problems you are experiencing can probably be traced back to problems in your computer’s Windows registry. If you’ve never even heard of a Windows registry, don’t feel bad. Many normal computer users haven’t either. The registry is usually the province of computer repair technicians and software geeks.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Running a Computer Repair Business Last updated: 8/7/0 3

Q. What advice/comments do you have on repairing laptop computers?

A. I try to avoid them and have been burned quite a few times by attempting to work on them. One cannot usually work on laptops effectively without a very large supply of parts, extensive documentation, and experience. The parts are usually hard to identify and get, expensive, and difficult to return. The documentation is almost impossible to get. There are an “infinite” number of models and manufactures, and many manufacturers have gone under, and they keep changing. The cases have no rhyme or reason and are often hard to figure-out, and they are very fragile. They are difficult to take apart, put back together again, and avoid breaking or marring while doing it. You need a large shop (or depote–thats’ what I usually use if I can’t avoid them) in a large city that specializes in laptops, and you will usually pay to the nose for parts and labor. If it has a bad motherboard, chances are that it is beyond economical repair. Except for basic repairs and troubleshooting, the same is true for printers and monitors, although to a lesser extent, and they are now so cheap that in most cases they aren’t worth fixing if they are outside of warrantee. Them’s the facts as I see ‘em… Larry

postheadericon Stephanie Vaughn Hapke: Clean Out Your Computer Day

Spring is a time for renewal, and many people celebrate the coming of spring in a common way. The ritual of “Spring Cleaning” gives us a reason to clean out our basements, garages, closets and computers. Yes, that’s right, I said computers. George Carlin said that a home is just “a place for your stuff,” and spring cleaning allows us to purge all of that extra stuff that we don’t use anymore, and gives us the room to collect even more stuff. Such is the case with computers as well.

Typical computer users purchase their computer and never give a second thought to maintenance until a problem pops up. Then you call the guys in the black and white VW bugs, your neighborhood computer repair shop, or your family IT support person (you know, the person in your family that everyone calls when the computer breaks).

To use another analogy, you take your car in for oil changes and tunes-ups to keep it running well. Why don’t you do the same for your computer? Originally sponsored by the Institute for Business Technology, and in existence since at least 2000, Clean Out Your Computer Day falls on the second Monday in February — February 8th this year.

postheadericon Computer Diagnostic Utilities

If you’re experiencing computer trouble, these popular computer diagnostic tools can help you save money by troubleshooting the PC yourself, without the need to take it to an expensive computer repair shop. Computer diagnostics can be done on several different levels, by running software, visiting sites that can automatically perform checks, and by physically adding hardware to your machine to run tests. Depending on your circumstances, some of these options can help you diagnose problems you’re having with your PC.

Diagnostic Software

If you’re experiencing problems with your computer crashing, you might have problems with your RAM or your hard drive. To run software that can scan your hard drive, you should first determine what model hard drive you have in your computer. Chances are, you have a Maxtor, Western Digital or Seagate drive. The following software can be run, depending on your model:
