A Brief History of Computers at @JeremyMeyers dot com
by Jeremy Meyers Note: Yes, a lot of this is from Grolier’s Encyclopedia. Hey, I was young. I didn’t know any better. Credit where credit is due. Also, this information is only current as of the early 1990′s (1993, to be exact), and no I’m not planning to add more information anytime soon. I would not recommend scamming this for your own homework, as some of the conclusions are rather humorous today.

Recent Advances In The Beginning…
The history of computers starts out about 2000 years ago, at the birth of the abacus, a wooden rack holding two horizontal wires with beads strung on them. When these beads are moved around, according to programming rules memorized by the user, all regular arithmetic problems can be done. Another important invention around the same time was the Astrolabe, used for navigation. Blaise Pascal is usually credited for building the first digital computer in 1642. It added numbers entered with dials and was made to help his father, a tax collector. In 1671, Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz invented a computer that was built in 1694. It could add, and, after changing some things around, multiply. Leibniz invented a special stepped gear mechanism for introducing the addend digits, and this is still being used. The prototypes made by Pascal and Leibniz were not used in many places, and considered weird until a little more than a century later, when Thomas of Colmar (A.K.A. Charles Xavier Thomas) created the first successful mechanical calculator that could add, subtract, multiply, and divide. A lot of improved desktop calculators by many inventors followed, so that by about 1890, the range of improvements included:
- Accumulation of partial results
- Storage and automatic reentry of past results (A memory function)
- Printing of the results
Each of these required manual installation. These improvements were mainly made for commercial users, and not for the needs of science.

Building a New Computer – Part 1: Choosing Hardware
I recently decided to build myself a new desktop computer for my house, and after talking about it with a number of friends, I realized that most people have no idea what goes into building a computer yourself… so this series will explain the basics of building your own custom PC.
My primary goal with the new computer was to have a quad core machine with lots of memory, and two DVI ports so I can run dual monitors. I didn’t have a huge budget, so the configuration I chose was the best I could find for the money I had.
Keep Your Registry Clean To Maximize Computer Performance
Keep Your Registry Clean To Maximize Computer Performance
In my last post, I gave a few tips to maximize computer performance. The major point I was trying to make is that even seemingly innocuous things like programs that automatically load when you start the computer can impact your computer performance. Clean Registry Means Fast Computer
If you’re sure that you’re not losing memory to programs that you don’t need, here are a few more tips that may speed up your computer.
Clean Sweep Computer
A computer slows down due to various reasons, one of the factors that can slow down your computer are viruses that are in your system. These viruses can cause clogging to your system resulting to slowing down of your computer. Another thing that can slow down your computer are the errors in your registry. Whatever your case is it is best to clean sweep your system for a faster computer performance. A few minutes of cleaning your system will save you hours of slow productivity due to a slow performing computer.
The first thing you need to do is to perform a simple full system virus scan. Every antivirus has the ability to perform a system scan. A virus scan will tell you whether your computer is infected by a virus or not. These viruses are messing up with your computer that’s why you’re having a slowdown in your computer processes. Update you anti virus first with the latest database; this will make your anti viruses more updated from viruses’ threats. Run a full system scan and remove any infections detected by your anti virus and restart your computer.

Answer Line: Why Is My Speedy PC Slowing Down?
All of a sudden my once-fast computer behaves as if a ton of molasses took over its innards. How can I get my speed back?

There are several possible causes for your PC slowdown–and as many solutions. First, back up your Registry as a safety precaution; browse to “How Do I Restore My Windows Registry?” for instructions. Here are the leading performance-robbing suspects:
How to Make Your Computer Boot Faster
Why can’t a computer be more like a television? When you push the power button on a TV, it just turns on. Computers, on the other hand, boot—as in, they take so long to get started that you want to stick your boot into them.
You would think that the march of technological progress would have reduced boot times over the years, but newer operating systems can take longer—Microsoft Vista actually tends to boot more slowly than its predecessor, Windows XP. (Microsoft claims its next-generation operating system, Windows 7, should provide drastic improvements in boot time.)
Computer Suddenly Slow
Have you been wondering – “Why is my computer suddenly slow?” This probably happens to most of us at some point. What was once a very fast computer can suddenly become bogged down and act sluggish. Well my first recommendation when asking “why my system is slow”, is to not automatically assume you need to get an upgrade or buy a new system. This is the biggest mistake I see folks make. They trash their current computer and spend hundreds even thousands on new equipment.
Well it is very possible to fix a suddenly slow computer. You can even make your computer run like new. What you need to do is perform some speed tweaks to fully optimize your system.

* Disable Name Completion and local network lookup
Whenever you enter a single word into the address field Opera will look in your bookmarks for that name and try to find a local network with the name as well. Server Name Completion tries to append prefixes and suffixes to the name automatically. While this feature might be great for some users it uses time and cpu and should be turned of for faster browsing.
