postheadericon 10 Simple Ways to Speed Up your Windows Xp

1. Defrag Disk to Speed Up Access to Data

One of the factors that slow the performance of the computer is disk fragmentation. When files are fragmented, the computer must search the hard disk when the file is opened to piece it back together. To speed up the response time, you should monthly run Disk Defragmenter, a Windows utility that defrags and consolidates fragmented files for quicker computer response.

  • Follow Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter
  • Click the drives you want to defrag and click Analyze

postheadericon Computer freezing/slow- HijackThis log

Hi! My computer is very slow booting up and has drastically slowed down (or freezes) navigating between files/programs, opening and closing programs, etc…. I recently re-installed Microsoft Office 2007 and shortly before that had to re-install Java as well. Java Applets were not loading and running. Last time I had both of these programs installed, both seemed to cause the same problem- slowed common functions down (issues mentioned above) or froze. So, I decided to run HijackThis to see if the problem could be found. Any help you can give it appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!!

postheadericon Keeping Old Computers Alive

Find additional tools and tips for greening your nonprofit through TechSoup’s GreenTech Initiative, where social benefit organizations can share and learn more about technology choices that can help to reduce our overall impact on the environment.

There are many reasons to replace your computers before they could reasonably be called old. Big corporations may replace their computers every three years or less. I usually recommend that nonprofits replace their computers every four years. One reason to do this is so computers are replaced before they fail, so that down-time can be scheduled instead of being caused by unexpected failure. Productivity increases with newer computers, as people spend less time waiting for programs to open and respond to commands.

Newer computers have newer technology, which means improved security, stability, and new features. Or maybe there is a new software package you want to use — and your old computer doesn’t meet the system requirements.

Here’s how I do it, feel free to follow if you feel your computer and/or laptop (for the purpose of this article the term “Computer” stands for both) doesn’t work as fast as you think its capable of given your RAM, CPU, Operating System, Hard Drive and Internet Connection. Many of these programs I’ve listed below, do the same or similar functions but I’ve found they get different results and I get the best results when I use them together in the order shown below. I do the following steps with the following software, every time I either reboot my computer, add or delete a program or if I feel the computer isn’t working as fast as I think it should be:

1. I click on (TuneUp Utilities) 1 -Click Maintenance which quickly cleans up your registry and hard drive with one click. 1-Click Maintenance is part of this software and is the basic application I use from it.

postheadericon How To: Optimize Your Computer

With so many cheap computers out there, it’s tempting for business professionals to just buy a new PC anytime their existing machine becomes a lemon. The costs of a new machine may be dropping, but a few small steps toward good PC maintenance can extend its shelf life and ease your finances a bit.

Proper, regular care of your computer, just like getting an oil change for your car, will greatly increase your PC’s productivity. How is this done? We decided to cover the important tools out there to keep your computer safe, sharp and optimized. The suggestions here apply to Windows users only with an emphasis on XP and Vista systems.

Scan your hard drive and remove unnecessary files When? At least once per week

Why? The more you use your computer, the greater chance it has of being corrupted. When you consider the onslaught of different programs and files that your PC has to juggle, it’s only natural that there can be hiccups. postheadericon Why is my Computer so Slow?

What makes a computer go really fast? Simple. The processor. Computer processors are called CPUs, which stands for Central Processing Unit. The CPU is the “chip” that must essentially perform logical and mathematical calculations in order for the computer to do its work. The second most important part is RAM.

The CPU controls just about everything in a computer, with the possible exception of some very specialized graphics functions used by game engines. It is up to the CPU to refresh the computer’s display, make sure all of the data in memory stays organized, and to respond to user input either through the keyboard or mouse.
