Soup Up Your PC’s Processor

Stan Miastkowski

As today’s newest CPUs surpass the 1-GHz barrier, it’s easy to get frustrated with the older, pokier processor in your PC. A CPU upgrade kit can give your older machine a reasonable performance boost for a practical price.

postheadericon How to increase the speed of my computer?

First of all check the minimum size of virtual memory (Here the path: Start – Settings – Control Panel – System – Perfomance – Virtual Memory, field ‘Minimum’). This value must be at least two times (better three times) higher than ammount of RAM. For example if you have 32Mb of RAM the optimal size of virtual memory is 96Mb. If this value smaller than I said, than you can change it in the next way: Mark the field: ‘Let my specify my own virtual memory settings’ – now you can change values in ‘Minimum’ field, after this type needed value in this field. Note: the size of virtual memory shall not exceed maximum free size on your HDD. After this mark the field ‘Let Windows manage my vitual memory settings (Recomended)’. Your changes will be accepted only after you restart Windows. The virtual memory is the file on disk C named ‘win386.swp’. After Windows restarts I recommend to defragment your HDD. Normally I do it with Norton Speed Disk with ‘Optimize swap file’ option enabled. The operation described above can solve problem of virtual memory bottlenecks.

postheadericon The Processor Speed May Be Reported Incorrectly in Windows XP

You may want to contact your computer manufacturer to verify the fastest possible speed of your computer’s processor.

Windows XP differentiates between a processor’s current speed and its maximum speed. In computers that use processor-throttling technology (such as the Intel SpeedStep or AMD PowerNow! technology), the processor’s current speed may be different from its maximum speed. The processor’s speed may be reduced to conserve battery life. If Windows XP queries the processor to determine its maximum speed while the processor is in a throttled (or reduced-speed) state, Windows XP reports a processor speed that is lower than the processor’s actual maximum speed.

To Check the Speed Settings To Check the Current Speed Setting

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and Maintenance.
  2. Click See basic information about your computer. The processor speed (in megahertz [MHz] or gigahertz [GHz]) appears under Computer on the General tab.

Recommendations For a New Computer

buying a computer The good news is that computer prices have dropped a lot over the past few years, and the computing power you get for your money is going up! I don’t recommend used computers for anyone, because the rate of change of computer technology will render most systems nearly obsolete within three years. If you’re a computer novice, wondering what kind of computer, monitor, hard drive, memory, and operating system to get… here’s some advice to get you rolling.

Windows or Mac?

You may have friends, relatives or neighbors trying to pull you into the “Windows vs. Mac” holy wars. In my opinion, the choice of operating system really doesn’t matter. From a beginner’s perspective, each has point & click interfaces that are pretty easy to use. Both will take you to the same Internet, and enable you to send and receive email. Both offer word processing, and the documents they create are interchangeable. Because Windows-based computers make up 90% of the market, they are cheaper. It’s the law of supply and demand in operation. And in some areas, it may be hard to find technical or repair support for Apple Macintosh computers. So if you’re budget-minded, and you don’t have any friends willing to help you with Mac issues, I suggest you go with a Windows-based PC. A good entry-level computer with monitor can be purchased for under $400, and sometimes you even get a printer in the deal. So what should a newbie look for in terms of speed, monitor, memory and hard drive specs? It doesn’t have to be all that confusing…

AMD uses a “processor rating” (PR) in the model name of most of their processors. The table at right shows a few samples of the AMD processor name versus actual rated clock speed. AMD’s PR does not represent the actual clock speed of their processor, and is usually much higher than the processor clock speed.

postheadericon Windows PC, Notebook, and Laptop Scout: Speed Fast Facts

Speed = processor + RAM

When you’re thinking about laptop speed, you need to take into account the processor speed and the amount of RAM installed. This will affect how well your laptop runs certain types of programs and the number of programs it can effectively run at one time.

What exactly is a processor?

Sometimes called a central processing unit (CPU), a processor contains the logic circuitry that performs the instructions of computer programs. Programs tell the processor how to interpret data to get usable results.
