There are several things you can do to increase the “speed” of your computer – but w/ your current specs you need to increase RAM (see step 1 below).

1) Clean up the disk. Uninstall unneeded programs (especially those that run at startup and/or put something in the system tray), run Disk Cleanup, and defragment the drive. This is a good first step that will almost always take a few seconds off boot time and application loads for any computer.

2) Stomp auto-starting programs. Click Start > Run and type “msconfig” at the prompt. Click the Startup tab and look at all that junk that loads when you launch your PC. Do you really need “Adobe Reader Speed Launch”? Probably not. Turn off anything else that looks useless, but be careful not to disable your anti-virus and important system components.

  • To begin, de fragment your PC (Go to Start -> programs -> accessories -> system tools -> Disk defragmenter. Few hours invested in it once in a while results in good speed. Deleting all unnecessary files prior to starting Disk defragmenter also helps a lot.
  • Adding RAM is another good idea to speed up the PC.
  • Internet cache must be cleared and cookies and temp directory must be deleted regularly to speed up browsing. Temp directory stores hundreds of files with time and slow down system immensely. Users of Windows 2000/ XP must make hidden folders visible first and then go to C: ->Documents and Settings ->USER->Local Settings->Temp folder; select all and press delete.
  • Another point which I feel is another ‘Best way to speed up my computer’ is an Antivirus program that can keep the system free from viruses, Spyware and malware. If your system runs extremely slow or shows unwanted websites or pop-ups when you are not even connected to Internet, then it is probably infected with some Spyware.
  • Run MSCONFIG utility and it would turn off all the unnecessary Startup programs that consumes lot of memory as well as processing power. Go to Start -> Run -> Type MSCONFIG & press ‘OK’.
  • Uninstalling unused programs/ files is another best way to speed up my computer. Go to Control Panel -> Add / Remove Program to delete program completely
  • Go to start -> programs -> accessories -> system tools -> Disk Cleanup to boost up your system performance.
  • Turning off fancy graphics also speeds up the system.
